Western Wear Tips

The original cowboys dressed for functionality. Chaps to protect the legs while riding a horse in rough terrain, wide-brim hats to shield from the elements, sturdy leather boots and metal spurs to direct and discipline a horse. These days, however, when women deck themselves out in crystal-encrusted boots and belts and men show off shiny boots, tall hats and embroidered shirts, it’s not necessarily about function. That’s because you don’t need to run a ranch or lead a cattle drive to don Western wear, especially in upcoming spring and summer. Western Wear is coming back in a big way and it seems to be at trend that just won’t quit. So if you’re planning to pick up a pair of boots or some nice Western Apparel, check out these great tips, and then head on over to McKinney’s Western Store!

For women Turquoise is a popular color in Western Wear, especially when it comes to jewelry. Boots are a must and can be worn with jeans, dresses or skirts. Multicolored boots with detailed cutouts or sparkle are popular right now, but it’s safe to ignore that trend if you’re only investing in one pair. In that event, a solid brown boot is the most functional option. Long skirts worn with flowing tops or short dresses worn with leggings are trendy looks in Western wear, but there’s one classic look that works for any Western event; crisp white shirt and a great pair of jeans will do you good if you don’t know what else to wear.

For men Men older than 35 usually go with a more traditional look, saving the rhinestones, loud colors and busy prints for younger generations. The hat is important, and although there are a lot of options, hats generally can be broken down into straw and felt varieties. Felt hats traditionally are worn in winter, so a straw hat is a good investment for a summer event. However, men have been known just wear their favorite hat, regardless of whether its seasonally appropriate. McKinney’s Western Store carries several different hats so you can try them all on and see which one suits you best! Jeans should be not too slim, but not too baggy and boots are a must. Almost anyone can pull off a Western outfit with Wranglers, a tucked-in shirt, boots and a belt. There is, however, one thing you should never do in dressing like a cowboy; never tuck your jeans into your boots.
